EV maker Coda opens new HQ in Los Angeles

ev-green-car-electric-carWith politicians elbowing each other for photo ops and making grand speeches taking credit for everything from creating jobs to saving the Earth, electric-car maker Coda officially opened its new headquarters at the intersection of Fairfax and the newly named “Electric Drive” in Los Angeles on Nov. 10.

Local media and civic leaders love hearing about the win-win deals our leaders are making for us, so Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and California Gov. Jerry Brown gave speeches, people cheered and the doors were opened on the former movie-prop warehouse that will now house everything from sales and marketing to R&D for the little electric-car company.

Coda is the passenger-car outgrowth of Miles Electric Vehicles, both founded by entrepreneur Miles Rubin to electrify transportation. While Miles Electric Vehicles focused on small commercial trucks and campus people transporters, Coda has concentrated on street-legal, freeway-ready passenger cars for the general public. Even though Coda has had its ups, downs and delays over the years, company execs now say that the first vehicle will be available for sale in “early 2012.” Continue reading 'EV maker Coda opens new HQ in Los Angeles'»

Long-term car review 2011 BMW 550i xDrive Sedan

After logging a near-record 8,475 miles over the previous three months, time behind the wheel of the long- term BMW 550i xDrive fell way off. Our ongoing battle with BMW’s infernal spec run-flat tire continued to vex us at every turn, the tally of blown rubber reaching seven. That’s seven tires we’ve had to replace at the cost of roughly $320 per–in nine months.

That’s not counting the wrong-size tires the shop in Vermont installed, a pair of 245/45s when the car calls for 245/40s. The tires, mounted on opposite corners, confused the heck out of the BMW’s traction-control system. We had the problem rectified quickly, but with those Goodyear LS-2 RunOnFlats in high demand (curious, no?), we had to call in a favor to get some.

Still, no sooner had we had the new Goodyears mounted than another went down. And despite our pleas to BMW for a recommendation for a non-run-flat tire, it instead sent us some Bridgestone RE050A run-flats.

You can guess what happened next–though that takes us into the fourth quarter. And before one assumes that all of this trouble is of the very-large-Detroit-pothole variety, know this: Only two were destroyed by hard hits. The others succumbed to bumps completely unnoticed by the driver. Continue reading 'Long-term car review 2011 BMW 550i xDrive Sedan'»

Mazda 5 Grand Touring: Long-term car review 2012

Mazda 5 Grand Toyota 2012

Mazda 5 Grand Toyota 2012

Anything with sliding doors tends to slip down the list of most-desired vehicles in our test fleet. But that may be changing, thanks to the sporty intentions and minivan functionality of our diminutive long-term Mazda 5.

The nearly 5,000 miles we clocked in our first three months in the Mazda 5 helped identify a number of likes and dislikes. We appreciate the vehicle’s economical and reasonably peppy powertrain, its responsive Ford Focus/Mazda 3-based chassis and its overall utility.

“The four-banger loves to rev, and despite the low number of cylinders, the car was fine on the freeway, easily keeping up with the crowd in the left lane,” one editor noted. The chassis reminds us of something sportier than a van, with good body control and steering making it feel fairly spry for a 3,400-pounder–but it’s no Miata. “I feel a bit of the soul of a Mazdaspeed in there, but it’s buried pretty deep,” an editor said.
